Cosmic Treadmill, Episode 77 - Heart Break Comics (1984)
Sunday Feb 11, 2018
Sunday Feb 11, 2018
Hello and good day to you, comics enthusiasts! This week, our North American hosts Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) travel North of the border and read a tale of romance, betrayal, and tough-as-nails milkmen in Heart Break Comics (1984) by David Boswell! After some biographical details and a brief introduction to the World's Toughest Milkman, they detail all 40 pages of Heart Break Comics, including voices for all the strange characters in this world. After cleaning up some spilled milk, our pair deliver a history of Canadian comics dating back to the 18th Century and continuing almost to the present day! Plus: a piece of listener mail! It's better than a Tim Horton's Maple Claw! Okay, it's not that good, to be honest.

Cosmic Treadmill, Episode 76 - Monster vol. 1 (1994)
Sunday Feb 04, 2018
Sunday Feb 04, 2018
Konichiwa, comics enthusiasts! This week, Chris (@AceComics) sends Reggie (@reggiereggie) into unfamiliar territory and tasks him with reading his first ever tankobon collection of manga: Naoki Urasawa's Monster vol. 1! Originally published in Japan in 1994, then translated and republished in North America in 2006, our fellows read all eight chapters of that first volume, after a creator bio and a very brief description of manga. Then, they tell the rest of the story, as detailed in seventeen further volumes, and conclude with a look at advancements in neuroscience that were not necessarily expected...or perhaps entirely warranted. It's a spooky gross-out of an episode, so be sure to listen with your significant other!

Michael Straczynski and Eddy Barrows (among others), better known as the Superman: Grounded story arc! After the requisite bios and an out-of-date contest offer, we'll stroll right into the tale, beginning with a prologue that appeared in the landmark anthology issue Superman #700. Sunday Jan 21, 2018
Zdravstvuyte, comics enthusiasts! In this episode, Cold Warriors Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) tackle a very complicated comic book miniseries that deals with an even more complicated twentieth geopolitical situation when they read 1985's The One #1 by Rick Veitch! After a quick creator bio and a high school history refresher, they'll push past nuclear nightmares and read all of The One #1, lending their special talents to the issue. After a break, they recap every other issue in the series, and close out the Cold War with some comic books inspired by that worldwide anxiety that might have been contemporaries of Rick Veitch's series! It's going to be apocalyptic!

In this episode, our sub-space explorers Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) examine a seminal issue in the legacy of Marvel Comics' First Family, issue #51 of Fantastic Four by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby! Including detailed bios of these titans of comic book history, they dive deep into the self-reflection and redemption of a character with no name in "This Man...This Monster!" Then, our literary duo discuss the nature of a tragic hero--and discuss some tragic heroes in comic books (with one special caveat)! Here's your invite to the wedding event of the season! In this episode, Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) examine one of the more unsettling characters in the DC Comics Universe, when they examine the life and times of Terrence Arthur Long, with a special concentration on his wedding to Donna Troy in Tales of the Teen Titans #50 by Marv Wolfman and George Perez! After the requisite creator bios, our ceremonial ushers detail every appearance of Terry Long leading up to the nuptials, then go through every appearance of his after the fact. They wrap up the episode with a look at other comic book weddings through the years! You'll want to make it to this episode on time!

Happy new year, happy New Universe! In this episode, space-cases Chris (@AceComics) and Reggie (@reggiereggie) investigate the prolific and controversial life of one-time Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, when they read Star Brand #1 from 1986! There's a bio on penciller John Romita, Jr., and a bit of information on the rise and fall of Marvel's New Universe, but much of the episode is given over to Jim Shooter--his accomplishments, his failures, and his editorial philosophy! All of this culminates in some off-the-cuff ruminations and some listener mail. Enjoy!
